Mary Rooney, P.E., Project Engineer

Qualifications Summary

Ms. Rooney has 18 years experience identifying and remediating contaminated properties.  Her broad technical experience includes investigation, permitting, design, construction oversight and project management of Superfund, industrial, and brownfield projects.  Ms. Rooney uses her strong management and communication skills to keep regulators, contractors and field personnel all working toward a project’s timely completion.

Experience

Industrial Site Remediation

  • Oversight of design and installation of four thermal treatment systems which remove creosote, phenols, PAH’s and dioxins/furans from soils at a Maryland Superfund site.
  • Routinely involved in the development of Air Pollution Control (APC) systems for projects in several states;  experience using technologies such as; scrubbing, condensing, WESP’s, cyclonic, carbon absorption and thermal oxidation.
  • Past projects have also included designing a groundwater treatment system to process influent VOC loading of up to 12 pounds per hour at flow rates of up to 90 gpm.

Site Investigation

  • Conducted Remedial Investigations (RI) at dozens of sites.  Observed excavations and documented subsurface conditions, oversaw excavation of contaminated soils, supervised location and installation of groundwater monitoring wells and sampled and maintained remediation systems.
  • Prepared RI reports analyzing data and recommending clean up technologies for more than 15 sites.

Brownfields

  • Coordination of the demolition of a large electronics production facility; environmental issues handled include PCB laden debris and oil, asbestos materials, lead paint, HFC and mercury products.
  • Coordination of the demolition and restoration of a one acre industrial site; environmental issues handled included UST sampling and remediation, stream bank restoration of the adjacent Exceptional Value waterway, returning the site to riparian state.

Regulatory Compliance and Permitting

  • Prepared Air Pollution Control Permits for dozens of sources.
  • Soil Erosion Control Plans – developed several remediation projects in the region and have oversaw the installation of these measures.
  • Served two years on NJDEP’s committee to develop the “State-of-the-Art Manual for On-Site Remediation.”
  • Reviewed permit compliance and spill containment practices at many operating manufacturing sites.
